Meet the Staff

Dr. Frederick T. Wood

Owner, 1983

Dr. Wood moved to Arizona from the North east coast in 1958, with his parents and four brothers, and their family quickly put down roots. He grew up in Tempe, attending Broadmor Elementary, McKemy Jr. High and Tempe High School. He graduated from ASU in 1972 with a BA in Education and a BS in Chemistry. While at ASU, he played on the tennis team and joined the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity; and has maintained many friendships from his high school and college days.

He graduated from the University of the Pacific Dental School in 1976 and enjoyed living in the Bay Area. But when his children became school age, he made the move back to Tempe in 1983 to start his dental practice.

Dr. Wood has put together a team of experienced, caring staff that shares his desire to provide quality family dental care which includes cosmetics, implants and orthodontics. He feels his success has been in the relationships he has built with his patients, achieved through a high standard of care and honesty.

Not one to be idle, he stays healthy with yoga, bicycling and swimming. On his days off, you can find him at the golf course, on a tennis courts or even sailing when he has a chance to travel.

“I enjoy the camaraderie of an active dental practice and the opportunity to help people in difficult situations.”

Susan Graves

Office Manager, Employed August 1984

Originally from Arkansas, Susan arrived in Arizona in 1984 and now says she wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. She began a rewarding career in dentistry in 1972, starting out as a dental assistant then transitioning to the business office. Susan’s enthusiasm for providing a personal touch or a helping hand has her wearing many hats around the office. She’s typically found at the front desk, but when the need arises, you might see her assisting Dr. Wood with a patient. She considers it a privilege to work with a staff that is dedicated to providing their patients the best dental treatment possible.

Susan’s passions are family, friends and good food; a combination she tries to unite as often as possible. When she’s not trying new recipes, you might find her prowling through an antique shop, working on a crossword puzzle or catching up with her family. She and her husband are now empty nesters, but enjoy entertaining friends and family in the home they’ve shared since 1988.

Marsha Carlson

Hygienist, Hygienist, Employed November 1994

Marsha was born in the Black Hills State of South Dakota, and moved with her family to Tempe in 1966. A graduate of McClintock High School, she has strong roots in the community and now calls Chandler her home. After graduating from Phoenix College, she began her career as a hygienist; forming many friendships with patients she has seen over the years. Marsha is the ultimate team player and a true asset to our dental practice; a result of her commitment to excellence in her personal life and an inherent work ethic.

Sports fan? That’s Marsha. Her parents instilled in her a love of sports and living a healthy lifestyle. For many years, Marsha’s main focus was supporting her daughter, Caylyn, who played softball at ASU. Marsha was in the stands to cheer on the Lady Sun Devils when they won the National Championship in 2011. Being a former softball player herself, she never minded the long days at the ball field or the long road trips for tournaments. These days, time for reading books and crossword puzzles has been replaced with a new love – her grandchildren. And now, with both her daughter and her son-in-law coaching college softball teams, Marsha will have even more time at the ball park in her future.

Shelley Kramer

Hygienist, Employed May 1996

Shelley grew up in Michigan, graduated from the U of M in 1982 and began her career in dentistry. Her broad knowledge is an asset to our hygiene program and also led her to teach part-time at Phoenix College’s Dental Hygiene Program. Shelley has developed a loyal following of patients who know she will provide the best of care with a gentle touch.

An avid outdoor lover, Shelley and her husband, spend weekends working on their cabin in Alpine, which offers them a chance for hiking, fishing and exploring the beauty of Northern Arizona. With two grown children, Dan and Shelley have not slowed down since experiencing an empty nest. Their part-time business “Rockology.net” takes them across the country where they sell precious rocks and gems imported from all over the world. Their next adventure began when their first grandchild was born in Tucson and they now spend time burning up the miles between here and that new Grandson.

Janet Reno

Hygienist, Employed February 1996

One word best describes Janet – busy, busy, busy! Growing up Chicago, Janet left the Midwest behind and moved to Arizona in 1980 after visiting a friend and falling in love with the Southwest. She was a mother of 2 young daughters when she started hygiene school, so her children have always known their Mom worked ‘down in the mouth’. Janet joined our dental team in ’96, quickly creating some of the most loyal patients ever.

When not working, Janet enjoys trying new recipes, entertaining and spending time in the great outdoors – taking a bicycle ride or hiking the mountains surrounding the Phoenix Valley. With her daughters now married and grandchildren coming along, Janet’s priority these days is time with her family. When she does find a moment to relax, you’ll find Jack, her loyal golden retriever or her tabby cat, Casey, by her side.

Kim Richey

Dental Assistant, Employed January 2010

Kim is another one of our team members who is a Michigan transplant, moving here in 1968. She began her career as a dental assistant in 1996 after working for years as stay-at-home Mom to her three daughters. We were very fortunate to have her join our staff in 2010. Kim has a gentle touch and an innate ability to put patient’s fears to rest. She is knowledgeable in all aspects of dentistry and willing to take the time to explain procedures fully and answer any questions.

In her off time, Kim strives to stay fit. She practices Yoga, swims laps and enjoys running; participating in several marathons. She’s also back in the “Mommy” business; now raising her grandson, Braydon, who she says “keeps me young”. When not busy with family or work, she enjoys spending time in the kitchen, trying new recipes. She became “Mrs. Fred Wood” when she and Dr. Wood were married at their home in October of 2013. Life for them is about family and work; both of which they are very committed to.

Becca Burton

Dental Assistant, Employed since March 2016

Meet Becca Burton who joined our team in March of 2016. Becca started her career as a dental assistant in 1989 working in the dental office of a family friend. His passion and commitment to dentistry inspired Becca and sparked a desire for continuing education in the dental field. She has extensive training in many areas of the business of dentistry, but she prefers to be where the action is – working side by side with the dentist making the magic happen! What Becca loves most about practicing dentistry is the impact that oral health can have on the whole body – and the constant problem solving nature of the profession.

Becca is thrilled to have joined Dr. Wood and the team at Wood Family Dentistry, as they most closely resemble the family-centered, patient- focused, excellence-producing dental practice that she fell in love with 30 years ago!
